Wild Capitalists, Wild Boars and Dwight D. Eisenhower. (In English below)
Si vis pacem, para bellum! Om du vill fred, förbered dig för krig!
Då krig har varit något normalt i tusentals år är detta utan tvivel ett gott råd. Men kan inte detta också vara en ursäkt för cyniska kapitalister att tjäna stora pengar med hjälp av skrämsel om krig? Eller drivs krigen, för människor som för vildsvin, av blind biologi? I så fall, varför? Har vi alls någon fri vilja att göra annat än vad vi gör?
Den 17 januari i år, 2011, är det femtio år sedan USAs president, Dwight D. Eisenhower i sitt ”Avskedstal till Nationen” gav oss en varning: ”I regeringens överväganden måste vi vara på vår vakt mot framväxten av oberättigat inflytande, vare sig eftersträvat eller icke, av det militär-industriella komplexet. Möjligheten av en förfärande tillväxt av malplacerad makt existerar och kommer att existera.” Och, lade den vise Eisenhower till, något som dock sällan citeras: ”vi måste även vara på vår vakt mot … faran att själva den offentliga politiken kan komma att bli en fånge till en vetenskaplig-teknologisk elit”.
President Obama fick nyligen i USAs Senat igenom ett avtal med Ryssland om begränsning av atomvapnen. Var inte det bra? Men priset för detta beslut var att han tvingades utlova 80 miljarder dollar till modernisering av USAs egna atomvapen. Varav det mesta går till det militär-industriella-vetenskapliga komplexet. Var det bra? Eller bara ännu ett exempel på en blind vapenkapplöpning, lika blind som vildsvinens kamp med varandra?
Vad har vildsvin med detta att göra? Hur beter sig sådana? Jag frågade en expert. Här är hans svar: ”Blir populationen för stor inom ett visst revir söker sig de yngre ut till nya marker, utstötta av de äldre. I första hand är det då unghannarna som får ge sig iväg och söka sig mat och suggor att para sig med. Om det nu finns nya marker att tillgå! I annat fall blir det en kamp på liv och död mellan galtarna, i första hand om vem som skall få para sig med honorna. I det fallet gäller en strikt hierarki. Någon annan än den äldste och störste hannen göre sig inga besvär, så länge denne har krafterna att hålla stånd. Slagsmålen mellan hannarna blir verkligen på liv och död. Trots att hannarna har byggt upp en pansarliknande hud över bogpartiet där de värsta stötarna sätts in, så händer det att någon får plikta med livet. Hannarna har ju sylvassa betar som kan bli decimeterlånga.” Att försöka ändra adrenalinstinna vildsvinshannars beteende är svårt, åtminstone på kort sikt. Men är det lättare att förändra de vilda kapitalister som, efter senaste valet, tar över mycket av makten i USA?
OK, jag påstår inte att våra toppkapitalister är identiska med vildsvin. Men jag har några allvarliga frågor som det kan vara nyttigt att fundera över.
I livets avgörande situationer, som i kampen om sex i en flock av vildsvin, eller om de rikas supervapen, pengar, (med vilket man kan köpa också journalister, forskare och till och med presidenter) är det då inte bara möjligt utan rent utav sannolikt att dessa båda typer av djur drivs av likartad DNA? Kan inte deras beteende kanske förklaras med något biologiskt arv som går miljontals år tillbaka i tiden?
När jag tänker på min meditation 2009:2, om Rita Levi-Montalcinis determinism, är min nästa fråga denna: Har vildsvin eller miljardärer alls någon ”fri vilja” att bete sig annorlunda än vad de gör? Eller är DNA-arvet i bägge arters arkaiska hjärnor det som sannolikt styr dem? Och det så starkt att det också styr den nya kognitiva delen av hjärnan så att båda arter är biologiskt förutbestämda att göra vad de gör?
Kan det vara så att dagens ekonomiska dans drivs av samma blinda biologiska krafter som de, som fick våra bibliska förfäder att dansa runt guldkalven?
Än viktigare är en fråga med vilken jag brottades i min bok om Ondskans biologiska ursprung: Kan vi alls se kampen mellan de olika vildsvinen som en kamp mellan “goda vildsvin” och ”onda vildsvin”?
Genetiken har visat oss hur nära de andra djuren vi står. Vi förklarar knappast naturens krigiska ätande som en kamp mellan ”goda” och ”onda” djur. Om så, följer det då inte att vi tvingas inse att också de vilda kapitalisterna – som vi alla – inte är vare sig ”goda” eller ”onda” utan föga mer än hungriga rovdjur? Rovdjur som sedan dansen runt guldkalven blint kämpar om makten över supervapnet pengar?
Låt mig sluta med att vara just så ologisk som vi människor lätt är. Låt mig anta att vi trots allt har ett litet uns av fri vilja att påverka vår framtid. Vad är då det viktigaste som vi, kanske du och jag, kan bidra med för att få en fredlig framtid? Kanske sluta med att slänga barnsligt förolämpande skällsord mot varandra, som till exempel ”Ondskans imperium”, ”Ondskans nätverk” eller den ”Store Satan”?

Si vis pacem, para bellum! If you want peace, prepare for war!
Since war has been a normal condition for thousands of years, this must certainly be good advice. Frighten your opponents to a state of peace! But can’t this also serve as an excuse for cynical capitalists to make their fortunes by threatening war? Or is warfare, for men as for boar, driven by blind biology? In that case, why? Do we have any free will at all to do anything other than what we do?
The 17 of January this year marks 50 years since US President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a similar warning in his Farewell Address to the Nation: “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military–industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” Then this wise man added something that is seldom quoted: “we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific–technological elite”.
A few weeks ago President Obama got the US Senate to accept an agreement with Russia on the reduction of nuclear weapons. Wasn’t that good? But the price for that decision was that he was forced to promise 80 billion dollar for modernization of the US atomic weapons, most of which probably will go to the military-industrial-scientific complex. Was that good? Or was it just only another example of a blind arms race, as blind as the struggle for power among wild boar?
How do the wild boar behave? I once asked an expert, Göthe Svensson. He replied: “When the population of wild boar in a certain territory becomes so numerous that their food supply is insufficient, the young among them are expelled by the older members of the group, or ‘sounder’. Mainly young males venture outside their territory to find both food and sows to mate with. That is, if new territory is available! Otherwise, this situation causes the boar to fight a fierce battle for life or death, primarily to determine who will mate with the females of the sounder. In this case a strict hierarchy of dominance rules: only the oldest and largest males can win these battles, as long as they have the stamina to hold out. The battles between the male boar are truly over life or death. In spite of the thick skin that provides a protective armour for their shoulder area, where they take the worst blows, some of them must die. The males have razor-sharp teeth and tusks that can grow to 10–20 centimetres.”
It would be difficult to modify the behaviour of adrenaline-inflated wild boar males, at least in the short term. But would it be easier to change the wild capitalists who, after the latest election, now are coming into power in the USA?
OK, I’m not saying that our leading capitalists are exactly like wild boar. But I do have some serious questions that could be useful to think about.
In crucial situations in life, such as the fight for sex in a sounder of wild boar or over the super weapons, money (with which you can by both journalist, professors and even Presidents) of the wealthy at the top of the world economy, it is not only possible but downright probable that both these animal species are driven by similar DNA? Cannot this behaviour be explained by a biological inheritance that goes back millions of years?
When I think about my meditation 2009:2, about the determinism of Rita Levi-Montalcini, my second question is: Do the wild boar or the very wealthy have any ‘free will’ to behave differently? Or is the DNA inheritance in the archaic brains of both species, that which probably steers also the new cognitive part, so strongly that both are biologically highly determined to behave the way they do?
Can it be that today’s economic dancing is ruled by the same biological forces as those which caused the biblical dance of our forefathers around the golden calf?
An even more important question that I struggled with when I wrote my book about The Biological Origin of Evil is this: Can we possibly see the struggle between wild boar as a struggle between ‘good and evil’ boar?
The science of genetics has shown us how similar we are to other animals. If we do not want to explain all of nature’s warlike eating as a struggle between ‘good’ and ‘evil’ animals, must we not conclude that even the wild capitalists – all of us – are not ‘good’ or ‘evil’ but actually little more than hungry predators? Predators who blindly struggle for power over the super-weapon money?
Let me end just as illogically as we humans often are. Let me assume that we nevertheless have a tiny bit of free will to affect our future. What is the most important contribution that we, perhaps including you and me, can make to a peaceful future? Perhaps stop calling each other with invectives, such as “evil empire” and “big Satan”?
