For a few thousand years man has lived with a metaphysical world-view. Many – most? – still do so.
For some fifty years the new Mendelian science of genetics has increasingly forced man to reconsider that which has given him a much needed stability in life and some consolation in death. It has pushed us to ask if it really may be so, that we are not created in the image of an omnipotent God but, instead, are only rather powerless inflated bacteria or, even, the predators of predators?
History teaches us that all new religions have been “counter-religions”, causing much warfare and killing. Now, zealous soldiers for the biological world-view are provoking a new conflict. Without, I fear, deeply understanding their own Darwin.
I, personally, do not doubt that Richard Dawkins and others like him, on a “proximate” time scale, are right. But
knowing that I do not know who or what created the first Big Bang and with that the present universe,
being convinced that the last thing nuclear mankind needs is another deeply fanatical and emotional conflict, and
contemplating Socrates’ wisdom: “I know only that I do not know”,
it follows that I am willing to accept a compromise.
Neither do I find that unreasonable, on an “ultimate” time scale.
You all know Michelangelo’s painting in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, with God giving life to Adam. But you may have missed the extremely small dark dot in between the two fingers. I am not sure if that dot simply is the first bacteria which a God created some 3.8 billion years ago, leaving the rest of development to Darwinian evolution, or if it, possibly. is the universe which God, to tempts man’s hubris, has given to our scientists.
However that may be, any good scientist should know that, however much we do know, there will always be one more question that we will not be able to answer. If that is so, don’t disturb those who, peacefully, want to believe that the answer is “God”!

Under några tusen år har människan levat med en metafysisk världsbild. Många – de flesta ?- gör fortfarande så.
Under cirka femtio år har den nya Mendelska genetiska vetenskapen allt mera pressat människan att ompröva det som givit henne en efterlängtad stabilitet i livet och något av tröst inför döden. Kan det verkligen vara så, att vi inte är skapade till en avbild av en allsmäktig Gud utan, i stället, bara är uppblåsta bakterier eller, kanske, rovdjurens rovdjur?
Historien lär oss att alla nya religioner har varit “mot-religioner”, som orsakat många krig och mycket mördande. Nu håller nitiska soldater för den biologiska världsbilden på att provocera fram en ny konflikt. Utan, fruktar jag, att riktigt förstå deras egen Darwin.
Personligen tvivlar jag inte på att Richard Dawkins och andra av hans sort, i ett “proximativt” perspektiv, har rätt. Men
då jag vet att jag inte vet vad eller vem som skapade den första Big Bangen och därmed vårt universum,
då jag är övertygad om att det sista den nukleära mänskligheten behöver är en djup fanatisk konflikt till, och
då jag funderar över Sokrates visa ord “ett vet jag, att jag intet vet”,
följer det att jag är villig att acceptera en kompromiss.
Inte heller finner jag detta orimligt i ett “ultimativt” perspektiv.
Du kommer ihåg Michelangelos målning i Sixtinska kapellet i Rom, där Gud ger livsgnistan åt Adam. Men kanske har Du missat den extremt lilla mörka punkten mellan de två fingrarna. Jag är inte säker på om detta rätt och slätt är den första bakterien som Gud skapade cirka 3,8 miljarder år sedan, lämnande resten a skapelsen till den Darwinistiska evolutionen, eller om det, möjligen, är det universum som Gud, för att fresta människans hybris, gav åt våra vetenskapsmän.
Oavsett hur därmed må vara, bör varje god vetenskapsman betänka att, hur mycket vi än må veta, kommer det alltid att finnas en fråga till på vilken vi inte kommer att ha något svar. Stör då inte dem som, fredligt, vill tro att svaret är Gud!

Per alcune migliaia di anni l’uomo ha vissuto con una visione del mondo metafisica. Molti - la maggior parte ? - lo fanno ancora.
Per circa cinquanta anni la nuova scienza mendeliana della genetica ha costretto l’uomo in misura sempre maggiore a riconsiderare ciò che gli ha dato una certa stabilità nella vita e molto conforto di fronte alla morte. Ci ha indotto a chiederci se può essere davvero così: che non siamo stati creati ad immagine di un Dio onnipotente e se non siamo piuttosto soltanto dei poveri batteri gonfiati. O, anche, i predatori dei predatori?
La storia ci insegna che tutte le nuove religioni sono state “controreligioni” , che hanno provocato tante guerre e uccisioni. Ora, soldati un po’ fanatici della visione del mondo biologica stanno provocando un nuovo conflitto. Senza, temo, capire profondamente il loro proprio Darwin.
Personalmente non ho dubbi che Richard Dawkins e altri come lui, in scala temporale “proximate”, abbiano ragione. Ma
a. sapendo che non so chi o che cosa abbia creato il primo Big Bang e con esso l’attuale universo,
b essendo convinto che l’ultima cosa di cui l’umanità nucleare ha bisogno è un altro conflitto carico di fanatismo ed emozione, e
c riflettendo sulla saggezza di Socrate: “so soltanto di non sapere”,
d ne consegue che sono disposto ad accettare un compromesso.
Né lo trovo irragionevole, su una scala temporale “ultimate”.
Voi tutti conoscete l’affresco di Michelangelo nella Cappella Sistina in cui Dio dà la vita ad Adamo. Ma forse vi è sfuggito quel punto scuro piccolissimo a metà tra le due dita. Non so se quel punto è il primo batterio che un Dio creò circa 3,8 miliardi di anni fa, lasciando il resto dello sviluppo all’evoluzione darwiniana o se, eventualmente, è l’universo che Dio ha dato ai nostri scienziati per tentare l’hybris umana.
Comunque sia ogni bravo scienziato dovrebbe sapere che, nonostante tutto il nostro sapere, ci sarà sempre una nuova domanda alla quale non sapremo rispondere. Se le cose stanno così non dobbiamo disturbare coloro che pacificamente vogliono credere che la risposta sia “Dio”!
